The stone atrium is different from the other atriums in the Historic Centre, as it has five paved steps that descend towards the entrance of the church. At the corner of Chile Street and Guayaquil Street stands a beautiful stone cross, a work of art dating back to the 17th century, on where a small Christ is shown. |
The stone facade has two bodies separated by a cornice, which are held by braches.
In its intervals, 4 Evangelists are shown; an angel in the middle (Saint Matthew), two eagles to its sides (Saint John), two lions (Saint Marks) and two oxen (Saint Lucas)
This wooden door has an uncountable number of hearts, worked in bronze, that represent Saint Augustine, the man with the anxious heart.
Above the door is the keystone of the main arch with a sun figured medallion in it, representing the birth of Saint Augustine on November 13th 354 during a solar eclipse.
The second facade body presents two pairs of thick Ionic columns with a central frame holding the chorus window. Over this frame stands a vaulted niche with Saint Augustine´s statue, dressed in a bishop’s robe. Saint Monica and Saint Rita are displayed on two tiny niches on the sides of the stone facade. |
